V Welcome
V About
* Welcome to DigitalOutbox
* A podcast all about digital technology - computing, gadgets, gaming
* UK based podcast with a real world take on the digital trends
V News
V Wordpress hack Outbreak
* Hackers exploiting old version to spread comment spam and disguise links to dubious (spyware/malware) sites
* If your running anything but 2.8.4 you're at risk
* Easy to update now - one click although Shakeel can't use this unless he disables all plugins
* If you customise then updating is more hassle
* If you keep vigilant, you should have nothing to fear
* Is wordpress targeted because of it's size, ease of hacking - both? Is Wordpress the Windows of blog tools?
V RSS Cloud
* Push notification of blog updates
* The idea is to deliver news faster, without relying on a single company to do all the work.
* Lazyfeed and river2 support RSS Cloud - others to follow? The biggie is Google reader though.
V After the Deadline
* Really smart spelling, style and grammer checker
* Plugin - enabled on wordpress.com
V DSG Facebook Action
* DSG have said they are disturbed by reports that an unofficial Facebook group for staff of DSG has seen disparaging comments about their customers posted by staff.
* They will investigate and follow up with action where appropriate.
* Aren't all PC World customers stupid by definition? They are buying in store when they could by better and cheaper anywhere online!
* Wider issue of paranoid companies starting to sensor their employees even out of work.
V T-Mobile and Orange Merge
* Merger creates the biggest UK company in the mobile market. (Around 37%).
* O2 current leaders with 27%
* Deal expected to commence in November but take 18 months to complete
V Lies, Damned Lies...and Google
* Google Statcenter
* Many stats have UK/Euro focus - makes a change
* Great variety of stats
* Recommended podcast - More or Less: Behind The Stats
V Apple
V Apple Keynote
* It's Steve!
* Probably biggest news out of the keynote was the appearance of Steve
V iPhone 3.1
* App store update - genius for app's
* New list - apps by revenue - is this to support premium app's i.e. Tom Tom
* Longer backups initially but settled down to being quite quick
* Save video from mails to photo roll
V Stats!
* 75,000 app's, 1.8 billion app store downloads (excluding updates) (Really? An average of 36 downloads per device?)
* 50 million iPhone OS devices in existence (30 million iphones)
V iTunes 9
V Updated UI
* Easier to get album info - click on i, all tracks
* Cleaner, fresher with more space
* Uses webkit and html5 for some of the UI
* Inconsistent across Mac UI
* Overall better organisation of store
V Application organisation on iPhone
* Finally!
* Easy to move app's around and also move pages around
* Be nice to group app's, by genre etc
V Genius
* New Genius Mix creates 12 mixes
* Mixed results for Ian - one pretty poor, one excellent mix
* Mix can be sync'd to iPhone/iPod
V LP's
* Animations, lyrics, videos etc
* Could be interesting - but will people really want this other than fans?
* Is it to combat music industry who have talked about creating new format to rival mp3
V Extra's
* Think DVD extra's - you can now get them for Movies in the store
V Better sync options
* Sync by genre, artist
* Sync photos by album, faces, events
* Movies now have better options
V Can now fill remaining space on iPod/iPhone with music
* What happens if device is full and you want to buy an app? Delete some music? If so, pretty naff.
* HD Movies on iTunes - where have they gone. We are sure they used to be there but now can't find any.
V Ringtones
* Nasty! 30,000 available now. Worse - they removed podcast from iTunes on iPhone to make room for ringtones - is this to appease the studio's?
* They cost - why bother when you can do it for free?
V Home sharing
* Allows iTunes media to be copied and shared among 5 authorized computers in the same household, with settings available to make copying new purchases automatically
* Currently lax controls on this and apparently you can authorise a remote computer. Share apps and music, then unauthorise again.
V Limited social networking
* Limited social networking - twitter, facebook, upload mix to imix for friends - only share from the store, not your library
* Pretty poor to be honest - share out an advert for iTunes store to friends
V Wish List
* Add store stuff to wish list - just like Amazons
* This replaces shopping cart - everything is now one click to buy! Click Buy, it's bought. Be careful!
* Doesn't look to be a way of sharing your wishlist with friends
* Palm Pre broken again - get out!
V Media organisation
* Folder named Automatically Add to iTunes in your iTunes Music folder (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Automatically Add to iTunes/ in OS X; C:\Users\Your Username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes\ in Windows). Any music added to that folder will automatically be imported into iTunes.
* iTunes Media organization. It moves your folders around into a much more logical structure, with separate folders for audiobooks, iPhone apps, movies, music, podcasts, ringtones, TV shows, and voice memos.
V iPod Updates
V iPod Touch
* 64 gb, reduced prices 8gb - £149, 32gb - £229, 64gb - £299
* No camera!
* 8GB is same speed as existing Touch. 32, 65GB same speed as 3GS
V Shuffle
* reduced prices, colours - 2gb - £45, 4gb - £59
* Classic - 160gb - £189
V iPod Nano
* 8gb - £115, 16gb - £135
* Camera and mic, speaker
* It's a video only camera, no stills!
* FM Tuner - what?
* Pedometer - a bloody pedometer!
* One more thing totally devalued
V Don McAllister
* Great post on all the things that went into the keynote
V Spotify on iPhone
* Awesome
* No Last.fm integration
* Not a background app so quite an advantage for iPod on the iPhone
* 4 million tracks to choose from
* Streaming is fast
* Battery life is greatly affected
V C64 Emulator
* Pay per game - deals being made with original IP owners
* Pulled by Apple. They asked for Basic to be removed - dev hid it instead of removing (like Yelp), then told everyone, then Apple removed it. New version uploaded without Basic now. Keep pants on everyone.
* Why are people so excited? All games ranged from pretty pap to utter cack...
* But, if a SNES emulator came out we'd be far more interested!
V Flickr App
* Official from Yahoo/Flickr
* Free
* Quick
* Upload photo's and video
V 10.6.1 Update
* Flash, security, minor bugs
* New ad's released. Go on Chris, get a Mac ;-)
V Gadgets n Games
V Monopoly City Streets
* Live worldwide game of Monopoly using Google Maps
* Launched - Wed, Sept 9th
* Huge launch capacity issues. When servers leaked out data - looked interesting!
* Issues now feel resolved. They are resetting the game mid-week to allow everyone a fair chance.
V Palm Pixi
* No wifi, small, smaller keys!
* What a name!
V Dreamcast is 10 years old
* Precursor to Xbox, a great console that never took off
* Soul Calibour amazing, Daytona also stirs memories
* Was online also - there was a great online American football game
V iPlayer on PS3
* It seems the added spotlight of iPlayer has increased viewership significantly, as PS3 now accounts for 10% of all iPlayer viewing. In comparison, Mac accounts for only 8.5% of viewership
* Talking of PS3, Wipeout theme is free, others cost £1.99 - not sure about value
V Zune HD
* No European plans for Zune HD.
* Not to say it's not going to happen - but certainly not any time soon.
* Shame - device looks great.
V Picks
V Shakeel
V Free on iTunes
* Free content to download every week
* Free single of the week
* The Inbetweeners: Series 2 - first 4 episodes currently FREE!!
* Good way to build your library for free
* Try stuff you probably wouldn't normally bother with, only to be pleasantly surprised
V Ian
V Madden on the iPhone
* Plays really well - proper 3D graphics
* Takes advantage of touch so you can draw hot routes for your receivers - great feature
* Interface can get busy but you can slow down time to help pick out receivers or plan your run/avoid a tackle
* Single player only but with multiplayer to come via an update
* All the proper teams - great presentation, game resumes if you quit out for a call etc
V Chris
V Trials HD
* Available on XBox Arcade - PC as well I believe.
* Kick-start in your living room!
* Great game. Around £10. Good looking.
* Starts easy, gets mega hard. Highly addictive.
* Expansive - user content - share your tracks
* Frustrating at times but has the "one more go" in spades.
