Feedback
Not feedback as much as an apology to the residents of Portsmouth! My facts were wrong. The people of Paulsgrove merely staged demonstrations, fire bombed houses and cars and made people flee their homes - often innocent residents - and had 5 year-old kids holding some pretty sick placards and chanting hate messages. It was the people of Newport, Wales, that forced a Paediatrician to leave her home after vandalism thought to have come from confusion over her job title.

Tam recommends PS3 Media Server - Installed this and am able to play mkv on PS3. Java, no codecs to install, supported on Windows, Mac and Linux. Say goodbye to mkv2vob.

Lewis thinks we are Apple fanboys but recommends Windows Media Server PC - with Blu Ray, playback all formats, record in HD via freesat - perfect solution. Even offered us a loaner.

Facebook Buys FriendFeed
Facebook buys FriendFeed - why?
FriendFeed was a social aggregator but also a great place for conversations
Could see posts in real time and also other comments
Kind of like Google reader for social sites
Are Facebook buying the team, the search technology or FriendFeed technology?
Initially site was to be turned off over time but now it appears the site will remain - confusing.
Google Wave will create a similar environment?

Google Reader Goes Social
Can share stories to Twitter, Facebook etc
Can add send to items for PDF, Evernote, Blog etc
Can easily mark posts as read if older than day, week etc - far more flexible
Changes make it easier to scrapbook stories and share with friends

Update search engine from Google - try the sandbox site
Faster results but in practice we didn't notice much difference
Interesting test - try the Blindtest search engine
Shows Bing, google and Yahoo search results but doesn't tell you which engine was used - some interesting findings - Yahoo is pretty good!

Mobile App's Phone Home
Palm pre phones home with private information. Sends geo location of phone, list of applications, how long they were used for, crashlogs and alos third party apps not authorised by Palm
iPhone apps using Pinch Media also do likewise including sending back Facebook information like gender and age group
Main annoyance isn't the fact that app's are doing it (mobile phone vendors get a lot of this information every time you use your phone for example) but that app developers aren't making it clear that this information is captured or give the user an option to opt out of collecting the information.

Microsoft Can't Sell Word
Patent infringement on XML structured document storage - ie how Office documents are stored as docx, docm etc
Judge in Texas has ruled that a patent held by i4i has been infringed and therefore Microsoft must stop selling Word or importing Word into the USA. Some pretty woolly distinctions on what the companies "invention" is - they call it "custom XML"
There are lots of other products that apparently infringe the "invention" - such as OpenOffice - but they haven't gone after them.
Isn't all XML custom!!?? Isn't that the whole point!!??
Looks like i4i may well just be chasing a cheque
Pretty ironic that MS gets whacked for trying to open up their document formats. After years of proprietary formats.

Worked well in anger, one GPS locked on it was fast and reliable. Clear audio, clear maps and good lane changing assistance.

Recalculating took 3-4 seconds and was good enough
Doesn't have speed camera's but that will come in next update
Keyboard layout a bit awkward, again qwerty keyboard to be included in update
Chris had a small issue with the app almost powering down and taking 20 seconds or so to start tracking again - to be addressed in next update
Bargain for the price especially against Tom Tom at £60.

No mention of map updates or if you look at Live Traffic it's a button but greyed out - in app purchase in the future?
