Links
V Welcome
V About
* Welcome to DigitalOutbox
* A podcast all about digital technology - computing, gadgets, gaming
* UK based podcast with a real world take on the digital trends
V Adopt A Word
* Ian adopted the word 'apple' for the year
* £20 for the year, it's for charity
* Shakeel will maybe adopt a secret word at a later date
V Stacks
* Shakeel has been trying to solve a stack issue which he will blog about
* For iPhone and 1Password syncing, switch to agile keychain and sync via DropBox - solved his issues
V Feedback
* Tam recommended 2 iPhone games - Minigore and DoodleJump
* Brian got in touch regarding the OS 3.0 update - straw poll amongst colleagues - definite slowdown since the update with some reporting shorter battery life
* Chris agree's - loss of slickness and slightly more clunky but not an issue with battery life
* Shakeel - notices the drop in battery life but doesn't see the clunkiness as much as others
V News
V Twitter down, Facebook and Livejournal affected
* Pro Georgian blogger attacked by Russia?
* Shakeel and Chris didn't notice - Ian did as he loves his twitter
* Perspective needed - number three story on BBC
* Shows the power of botnets to cripple massive networks
V End of Free News?
* Rupert Murdoch announces end to free content from his press titles - all titles will be paid for by end of next year
* This is on the back of a $3.4 billion loss
* If successful other sites will follow
* Would you pay for access to The Sun?
* Shakeel makes the point that there are a lot of free alternatives
* Chris points out that there will be always free news content to consume on other sites
* Shakeel see's it as a public service - see's news as free
V Google News Archive
* Quadrupled the content archived
* Has newspapers dating back to 1700's
* Great resource that doesn't get a lot of press
V Skype under threat?
* EBay only has a license for the technology underlying Skype
* The Skype founders company, Joltid, who issues the licence looks now as though it's going to pull the plug on the licence over copyright infringement arguments.
* Skype was bought by eBay for $3.1billion - something which could now be worthless without the licence.
* It's unclear what this will mean for users - whether eBay will develop it's own tecnologies to continue to support the platform, whether we'll all need to find a new service or whether Joltid will buy back Skype for a reduced rate.
* Rumours of Google being involved in a purchase
* Massive impact for business and personal users
V Friends Reunited
* Bought by ITV for £125 million, sold for £25 million
* Now owned by DC Thomson, look to be leveraging Genes Reunited rather than Freinds Reunited
* None of us use it now but it probably was our first social network in the UK
V Delicious and Flickr Updates
* Delicious focussing on being more social - tweet links to friends etc
* Front page now based more on fresh links rather than pages with a high number of saved links
* None of us really use it anymore - bookmarks in browsers for us
* Flickr search improved - now shows more photo's and info for each photo when you search plus links to tags, groups and places related to your search
* Would be nice to search via camera metadata
* Shakeel and Chris point out advantage of SmugMug in that you can apply themes to your photo's and they look really good compared to Flickr
* Flickr's design hasn't really changed in four years
V Windows 7 'E' Cancelled
* Sanity prevails
* It now looks as though the only sensible solution to the whole saga has been chosen as the way forward. The user will now be offered a selection of popular browsers to install from a menu.
* The solution still needs to be agreed officially but looks likely to be spread out across the windows suite of operating systems.
* This should also open the way for upgrade versions of the software to be sold - rather than forcing users down a full clean install of their computer.
* Crazy Microsoft upgrade chart
V Palm again
* The pre was updated so that it's vendor ID say's Apple
* Now complained to USB Implementers Forum - seems the wrong place to be raising a complaint
* Chris wants to see a more open standard adopted - hook any hardware up to iTunes - see's it as a competitive advantage similar to Microsoft and IE
* Ian thinks it's in Apple's interest to work with Apple hardware only and from their business perspective they have every right to determine what hardware works with their software
* Shakeel thinks it would be good to open up iTunes to everybody - at some point in future. Apple have become dominant force so they could be forced in the future
V Gary McKinnon
* Lost latest appeal against extradition
* Hacked 97 computers in the US
* Arrested in 2002 and USA now want to extradite on terrorism charges - potentially faces 70 years in maximum security prison
* Issue (for us) is where did crime take place - UK or USA?
* He admits the crime but do the trial here, not USA
* He has been diagnosed with mild form of autism - concerns over mental health
V O2 Fail
* Data network down again
* Third time in three weeks
* No explanation from O2
* Rumours that they may lose iPhone exclusivity
* T-Mobile already selling iPhones on the quiet
* Importing phones and selling them to high value customers only
* Shakeel saw iPhone 3GS sim free and unlocked on play.com for £900
V Apple
V Exploding iPod
* Apple offers to pay for new ipod as long as family sign a gagging order
* Family didn't want compensation, just the iPod replaced
* Apple tried to silence them - this is on the back of a reporter in the USA trying to investigate how many of these cases there have been and being met with Apple's lawyers restricting access to the information
* US sites and bloggers dismissed this as UK press spinning a story - totally disagree
* Apple could have handled this so much better - refund and iTunes voucher or newer version of iPod. Instead of burying the story they managed to turn it into more bad PR
V Eric Schmidt steps down from Apple board
* Apple and Google are competitors
* Android and Chrome OS competing with Apple's core business
V New hardware?
* iProd1,1
* Tablet with high speed wireless access
* None of us see a reason for buying one
* Can't see Apple releasing a product without a compelling feature
* Chris can't think of any tablet that is appealing
* iMac refresh?
* Blu-ray and some amazing new feature that no one knows about
* Big deal - rumours, rumours, rumours
* Chris - wouldn't it be nice if Apple just released some news? Doesn't it get tiresome?
* Shakeel finds it all exciting as does Ian
* Apple get buzz around their products for free
* Can't believe that other firms don't do similar to Apple.
* Maybe other firms don't have the same level of control as Apple
V App Store Woes?
* Ninjawords app forced to remove swear words and other questionable words
* Also forced 17+ rating
* Not applied to other dictionaries
* Phil Schiller replies to Gruber and points out inaccuracies - developer removed the words, not at Apple's request, but to try and get the app into the store
* Also said they are still learning about the App Store and trying to make ir better
* Apple remove dev license from developer who had 900 app's in the app store, mostly of questionable quality
* This is a good move
* Shakeel - Apple still learning - this is the first App Store really on any device
* Android and Palm are more open - potentially better but then more noise.
* Chris - hopefully there are app's so you can see where the quality app's are - reviews, ratings etc
* Sex offender app removed too - bad for parents, great for sex offenders. Legal to have that information in the public domain.
* Developer to raise legal action against Apple
V Tom Tom Priced?
* £113.85 for software and hardware mount
* Includes hardware and software
* Oop's - we lied - doesn't include the software - that's hardware only
* Other mounting solutions are out there like Brodit which gets a good name
* CoPilot Live - Sat Nav software for iPhone for £25.99. Lot's of +ve reviews, for UK and a very tempting price.
* Chris - people will tend to use a brand they trust - big advantage for Tom Tom
V Games and Gadgets
V PS3 Slim
* 80GB discontinued in Japan, 160GB release soon or the much rumoured PS3 slim
* Quiet time for games - waiting for Sep-Dec gaming season
* PS3 Slim - cheaper for Sony, maybe reduce the small fan noise
V Xbox Natal
* No new console, updated 360 with Natal next year
* Natal competition to play it in a couple of weeks
V Nikon S1000pj
* First camera and projector in the same body
* Ian thinks its a waste of time
* Chris - interesting and a sign of things to come
* What about battery life?
* Why not plug into a TV?
V Pioneer Receivers
* SC-LX72, SC-LX82 receivers
* Cheaper one is £1700, 82 is £2000
* Amazing spec's (which it should be at that price) but Shakeel is very tempted
V Picks
V App Store Expense Monitor
* Free, mac only app that let's you see how much you've spent on iPhone App's
* Runs in your menubar
* Let's you enter real price you paid of individual app's as some might be on sale now
V HTML 5 Canvas
* Examples of what can be done without Flash
* Another example pulling random tweets and displaying them with graphics and sound
