Have you two finished your Apple love in now? Dear god, if I didn't know you both I'd say you were on the Apple payroll. This level of blind faith is not healthy! All I want to say – and will continue to say – is that the Apple model is all very good so long as their products are the best (or their end to end offering is the best) and they keep offering what the consumer wants. BUT they are proving every day that they are fully intent on being the consumers “dad” telling everyone what is and is not acceptable. What is morally right and wrong and what you can and can't do.
It's a regime.
I think it's important that we point out when something potentially locks consumers into a course that they can't easily reverse out of. It's all very well saying that consumers just want things to work, but I think sometimes, if they knew the whole story, they might think more about the alternatives out there.
When freedom of the internet comes up as a topic on our podcasts (and it often does) there is a prevailing opinion that consumers should have choice, that being told what you can and can't do is objectionable and censorship is an ugly thing. Yet you don't seem to care when Apple goes against all these things – or at least are prepared to overlook it. The problems don't come while these conditions only happen on relatively niche products but when a product dominates and gets a effective monopoly, none of these traits are good for consumers.
I know I keep harping on about it and I know I can sound like an broken record but it's important to at least keep this argument alive, if only to ensure that the decisions that companies like Apple make are debated and the consequences and ramifications looked at.
Hello. If only you could have made the podcast
We were describing a gadget on the cast. A gadget that we both want and admire. Do Apple do bad things? Yes. Is there things I wish they'd not do. yes. Does almost every other company do bad things? Yes. For me, if I analysed every company in the same way that Apple get's analysed and wanted to avoid a company making decisions for me I'd buy nothing.
I don't think it's a regime. It's a choice. I like great design, I like a lot of the software that I can only find on the Mac. If that changes in the future then I'd move.
Look at Windows MoFo 7 (thanks Tam). I think the look and design of the software is superb. I can't wait to see the final product. Live support will be superb…and remember Live is a platform where the games available are tightly controlled. Doesn't make it bad, just need to make a choice.
Anyway, looking forward to next cast…which might mention the iPad again.
