Hi Nigel, thank for your comments.
Our analysis was based on a typical £35 per month tariff which most users opt for.
I think when your current contract expires, and you renew, you will still have to pay for the new iPhone 3GS on this tariff.
You could of course go for a more expensive tariff and get it free.
In either case you would be tied in for at least another 18 months - 2 years. This means that when the new iPhone comes out next year, you will not be able to upgrade easily ...
The PAYG option, although costs more initially, it does free you from the shackles of a contract and you can upgrade whenever you like.

Yes, if you buy an iPhone 3GS on PAYG, you can put your contract SIM in it, restore your previous 3G backup to it and it'll work the same way as your 3G phone does

Thanks for this very useful analysis - made me feel I can actually warrant buying one. Another option is to renew the contract at the end of the 18 months and get another free iPhone 3GS, then sell the one you bought as a PAYG. Could even make a small profit this way!

It's an awful lot of money for what is, in reality, a pretty limited incremental upgrade. Sure, if you haven't got a 3G, it's a better version of a great phone - just not multi-hundred pounds worth of worth it!
